Canadian Federation of Independent Business

A non-profit founded in 1971 that represents more than 103,000 small and medium-sized businesses across Canada through government advocacy, member services and business resources.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) is a non-profit organisation founded in 1971 that represents small and medium-sized businesses across Canada. It has more than 103,000 members, drawn from independent business owners in every province and territory, and provides a collective voice for them at federal, provincial, territorial and municipal levels. Its advocacy focuses on reducing red tape, improving interprovincial trade and addressing taxation challenges.

Policy positions are set directly by member business owners rather than by executive leadership. The organisation describes its purpose as creating a favourable environment for entrepreneurial growth and success, and it campaigns on behalf of independent business ownership through initiatives such as Celebrate Small Business.

Alongside advocacy, CFIB provides member services and resources. These include Business Advisory Services, with expert business advisors available in every province; HR Now!, offering human resources guidance; and a suite of HR tools, templates, training programmes and webinars on business topics. Its Member Savings Program offers members discounts on essential business services worth up to $5,000 annually. CFIB also publishes the Business Barometer, a national economic indicator that tracks small business confidence across Canada.
