Giant Tiger is Canada's third-largest discount retail chain, operating over 260 franchised stores across the country. Founded in 1961 as a single store in Ottawa's Byward Market, the company has grown to employ approximately 10,000 people while maintaining its original philosophy of low operational costs and everyday low prices. It remains privately held.
The chain stocks a broad range of merchandise including casual clothing and footwear, groceries, confectionery, pet food, cleaning supplies, housewares, stationery, toys, and health and beauty products. Its franchise model allows local store owners to tailor inventory and operations to community needs, distinguishing it from larger competitors with more standardized formats.
Giant Tiger operates with explicit commitments to price competitiveness, including an Ad Match Guarantee and a no-time-limit return policy. The company maintains corporate partnerships with Kids Help Phone, the Terry Fox Foundation, and Indspire, which supports Indigenous post-secondary students. These operational and community practices reflect a strategy centred on accessibility and local engagement rather than scale-driven efficiencies.
